About Artst:

It’s me…… C.V.Surendran
I would like to introduce myself as a hapless Victim of fate which confined me within the four walls of my little home. I am Surendran, Hailing from a small hamlet called Kannadiparamba in Kannur District, Kerala. Related below is the sum of my life story which can be read as the sad tale of a man who dreamt of colourful days in his artistic career.
The art works that I do today are manifestations of my struggle with fate which attempted to dispirit me, mentally and physically. My pictures had dissuaded me from many an attempt of suicide. Today, drawing has, become a routine for me and I would like to call my self as one who lives just for the sake of drawing pictures.
Time and fate give unbearable burden to some. As the school days were coming to a close, unexpected illness put out all the boyhood happiness in me. Till the age of 14, I was also as spirited and active a boy as anyone else. On a busy day during an exam season while in 8th standard, I fell down on my way to school. Nobody had pulled me down, nor did I stumble on anything. There began the long love affair of fate with me. Several days in hospital, prolonged checking’s and diagnosis at last named my disease -“Spinal Muscular Athrophy’’. Regular consumption of drugs somehow saved me from frequent collapses and enabled me to drag my studies up to 10th standard. Then one more disease come as friendly guest-“Diphtheria”. Afterwards, long three years were spent as a fully bed-ridden patient, taking. Only liquid food through to the food pipe. Back home, my condition did not improve much, and life was dragging on as it for it’s own sake. The dreams of youth were trampled on and the specter-like figure of death seemed to hunt me. To be one with death, I could at least have the capacity to move away from my bed. The world of colours and pictures was the only solace.
Now 35, I colour my confined world with the help of my aged parents. Now I realize that it was the gleam of God given talent that provided me the vitality to with stand the tests of life and enabled me to come out of the impending insanity. As my hand is still incapable of responding to the required movements of the painting brush, I developed the limited movements of the Ball pen as my unique style of drawing. These constraints force me to take long three months to finish a work. But it has become a boon in disguise, as for that I can focus all my thoughts only on my work. Now it has dawned on me that the easiest possible escape is in to world of pictures. The creative energy with in me gives me a power and confidence. An extended helping hand will take me long strides ahead, I believe.
Beyond the glow inside the glass, my drawings will reflect the minute aspects of contemporary social events. They provide an artistic perception of today’s world. They are creations made of the watery beads of acute pain and isolation. You don’t find the blinding glow of a colourful palette in my picture, nor is there a procession of striking images. Instead of creating figures and pictures out of lines and colours, I chose to present my pictures as a mirror to the viewers. I have fully taken in to consideration the concepts of the viewer As well.
I don’t have any Academic qualifications in drawing. I communicate to the viewer through the medium created according to my visual concept out of my perceptions, thoughts, pangs and dreams. But my primary need is one of existence. As I have to retain the stirring confidence in me and find a means to meet the expense of my treatment, I present these humble creations of mine before the generous viewers. You can watch and enjoy them, you can own and possess them.
